The Book Thief

I recently went to see the film 'The Book Thief'. Having read and loved the book, I was hoping that the film wouldn't ruin it and that it would be just as good. I was not disappointed. The film is very true to the book and is filmed in such a way that your attention is held completely for the whole 131 minutes. I had to go to the toilet half way through and I found myself running there and back because I couldn't bear to miss even a minute of it! Although not action-packed, the story and the characters are gripping and the film itself is incredibly powerful. My boyfriend (who has not read the book) and I were both laughing and sobbing in places, so involved are you in the plot. It made me so grateful to not have been born at such an awful time, and really brought it home how my grandparents and great-grandparents childhoods must have been.

I had to write this post as I felt so moved by The Book Thief; I highly recommend both the book and the film to everyone. The book is narrated by Death and so is very original, making sad subjects even more poignant but also bearable to read. I'm not a fan of sad films or books, and although this is sad in places, it is also funny, interesting and a brilliant story.

Has anyone else seen this film or read the book? I would love to hear your thoughts if so!

    1. They're both really good! But yes reading the book first is probably best- the narrator is death so it makes more sense in the film if you do it that way round :) xx

  2. I absolutely loved the book - when I saw the film was coming out, I made sure to read it first! It was so well written but the film was just as touching. Although I actually found the ending so much sadder in the book - sobbed for the entire last few chapters! xx

    1. Aw I agree, I loved how it was written, and by death, it was just so different. I cried my eyes out at both the book and the film- found them both as sad as each other! So powerful though! xx
