Travel: Yosemite National Park, California

Today's post is another instalment of my 5 week road trip around America, this time about Yosemite. First of all, it is one of the most picturesque places in the world. The drive up to the national park itself was stunning. With every turn there was yet another spectacular view; I must have said "wow!" about a hundred times! It was a winding road, up a mountain, surrounded by trees and rivers all the way, and we reached 5000 feet.

Yosemite Valley was very impressive and it was amazing to be just at one with nature and surrounded by all that natural beauty. We got a little shuttle bus to the bottom of one of the many hikes that you can do, and when we departed the bus a deer was just casually eating leaves at the bus stop! It didn't even flinch as we got off the bus, and it was only about 2 metres away!

We hiked up the Upper Yosemite Falls trail to get a view of the impressive waterfall, which is the highest one in North America. The treck itself was very challenging and steep, probably more so than we anticipated, but that made it even more worth it when we reached the top. I felt proud of myself for doing it. We also had a great view of the famous 'Half Dome', Yosemite's most iconic peak.

We were shattered when we got back down to the ground, not to mention very dirty! We felt exhausted but pleased with ourselves, like we'd really achieved something. It was an incredible experience and one that I would highly recommend.

FOTD: My Eye Makeup With Clarins

Eyeshadow Primer: Clarins Instant Light Eye Perfecting Base
I always always always apply eyeshadow primer before doing my eye makeup. If I didn't, it wouldn't last half a day. This primer ensures that my makeup lasts all day, that the colour stays vibrant and the eye shadow doesn't crease.
Price: £22*

I applied the concealer underneath my eyes in a triangle shape coming down in the centre, and then on to my brow bone to highlight it. This is my favourite concealer as it's so brightening and it doesn't ever crease or look cakey. It manages to look very natural but still provides a full coverage. It's a staple item in my makeup collection and one that I will always repurchase.
Price: £20

I am in love with these eyeshadows. They're just so softening and easy to wear. They have the pigmentation and easy blendable texture of a cream eyeshadow but the staying power and setting of a powder. Perfection. All the shades are stunning as well! I simply swept the Nude Pink all over my eyelid and then added a touch of the Rosewood to the outer corners up to the crease.
Price: £19*

This is my go-to eyeliner as it's easy to blend/smudge on both the bottom and top eyelids, and it stays put all day long.
Price: £6.50

This mascara lengthens and thickens my lashes nicely. I applied two coats to each eye and it really made my eyelashes stand out, with no clumps in sight!
Price: £22

I used the middle and a little bit of the darker shade in this beautiful little palette to fill in my eyebrows. The result is a natural one, but they still stand out, which was the look I was hoping to achieve. I combed them through with the little wand tool on the right and then set them with the wax which is next to the powder shades in the palette.
Price: £35*

OOTN: Come Out To Play

Playsuit: Lavish Alice (here)
Shoes: Primark (In store)

I am absolutely in love with this structured playsuit from Lavish Alice. It can be worn for a night out with heels like I've styled it here, or with tights and flats/ ankle boots during the winter months. Lavish Alice is one of my favourite brands and they have some absolutely gorgeous pieces for A/W14. I like clothes that are a little bit different, and these structured shoulders certainly make it that. It's made of that thick scuba material, which I love, meaning it's nice and warm.

The heels are from Primark and are actually really comfy due to the rubber soles. I've been seriously impressed with Primark's shoe collection this summer, they seem to have shoes that can be seen all over the high street but for a fraction of the price. I hope their A/W14 collection is just as good!

August Empties

Soap and Glory Orangeasm Body Wash
This shower gel is very fresh and it certainly woke me up in the mornings! I think it sounds like it will be really sweet and orangey smelling, but it's not at all. It's more citrus-like than sweet, I'd say more lemony than orange too. It's not too runny and lasts quite a while, so you do get your money's worth.
Repurchase? Probably not, but only because I prefer sweeter smells, I would buy someone this as a present though.

Eve Lom Dynaspot
This is pricey but it does last ages. It reduces the spot's size and redness, making it heal much quicker. It's the only spot cream I've tried that doesn't actually dry out my skin. It doesn't get rid of the spot over night or anything- I don't think any product could- but it certainly makes a difference and quickens up the process.
Repurchase? Yes.

Caudalie Beauty Elixir
I'm not 100% sure what this actually does. I use it as a toner, spritzing it all over my face after cleansing and before moisturising. It's quite minty and makes my face feel all tingly. It's very refreshing and cooling, so was lovely earlier this summer during those hot days. However, as nice as it is, I don't actually think it's done much for my skin; it's not made it worse but it's not improved it.  I'm undecided whether to purchase it again, especially as it's not cheap. I'd love to hear your thoughts if you use this.
Repurchase? Maybe.

Elemental Herbology Perfect Balance Moisturiser
It's taken me a long time to find a moisturiser that works for my skin so I really appreciate this one. It moisturises my dry patches but also keeps my oily areas in check, so my skin is less oily than it used to be. Perfect! It's oil-free, has an SPF12 and really hydrates and looks after your skin.
Repurchase? Yes.

Book Recommendation: The Universe Versus Alex Woods

The Universe Versus Alex Woods
This book is one that is a little bit different. I think fans of Jodi Picoult, Mark Haddon and Jojo Moyes would enjoy it. It's not quite as sad as a Jodi book, but it does provoke an interesting ethical debate. It is narrated by a boy, Alex, who is extremely geeky but extremely loveable. In this way it reminds me of 'The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night Time' and it makes it a little bit different. It's a unique and interesting read; one that makes you laugh, cry and really think about life and death.

I don't want to give too much away for those of you who haven't read it, but it's about how Alex becomes friends with an old man who is a social recluse. Their friendship develops and they bring out the best in each other. It's about both characters' journeys and choices.

I really enjoyed it. It has stayed with me since reading it and I've thought about death and how I'd like to go- without wanting to sound too morbid. I'd hate to lose all my faculties and dignity and I want to be remembered for who I am now, not an old shell.

If you've read this book I'd love to hear your opinion on it. Did Alex or Mr Peterson do the right thing?

What books would you recommend for me to read?

OOTN: Neon Lights

Dress: WalG (here)
Jacket: Club Monaco (From the USA)
Shoes: New Balance Trainers
Heels: Miss Selfridge (here)

It wouldn't be summer without a splash of neon. It looks great with a tan (not that I have one haha!) and even brightens up this miserable weather that we've been having. I love to be comfy and so always take this into account when planning my outfits. This particular day we were looking around a wedding venue (exciting news to follow about that in an upcoming post!) and then going for a meal. So, I needed to wear practical shoes and a jacket to keep me warm during the day, and I simply swapped the trainers for heels later on. This dress is so versatile that both outfits worked really well; I went from sporty to sophisticated in a simple shoe swap!

Is anyone else a fan of neon? What do you think about this look?

Recipe: Warm Potato, Pancetta and Mushroom Salad

This is quite a simple dish that I like to have for lunch when I fancy a salad but I'm feeling a bit cold at the same time, if that makes sense! It's warming and comforting and certainly fills you up.

5 new potatoes
Half a pack of pancetta
A handful of mushrooms
1 clove of garlic
3 or 4 spring onions
Rocket or spinach leaves
Approx 2 tablespoons of White wine vinegar
2 tablespoons of Creme Freche
Salt and Pepper

1. Boil the new potatoes. Leave the skin on for extra nutrients- plus time-saving! Let them boil for about 5 minutes before moving on to step two, just so that they will all be ready together.

2. Fry the pancetta. You don't need oil, it will fry better on its own.

3. After the pancetta has been frying for a few minutes and has changed colour, add the mushrooms and then the garlic. Fry gently, don't have the heat on too high as there's nothing worse than burnt garlic! They will only take a few minutes.

4. Add the white wine vinegar and mix it all together. Add the spring onions. Fry for one minute and then add the creme freche and potatoes. Warm through- only keep it on the heat for max 2 minutes or the creme freche will start to separate. Season to taste.

5. Fill a plate with rocket or spinach leaves and then add the warm salad on top. Add a sprinkle of chives for an extra bit of zing!
