Clarins New Anti-Ageing Products

As anti-ageing products aren't really aimed at my skin type at the moment, I thought it would be more appropriate to ask my mum to trial Clarins's new anti-ageing products for Ro's Tinted. She has been using the Clarins Super Restorative Day Cream and the Shaping facial Lift Total V Contouring Serum every day for three months now, and has kindly agreed to write a thorough review on both products. So without further ado, here is a Guest Post from my one and only lovely mum....

For years I used the same face cream.  It seemed to agree with my skin and kept all but the finest lines at bay.  Then I turned fifty and my skin seemed to suddenly change.  The lines were deepening and I looked tired all the time and worst of all I kept breaking out in spots like a teenager.  I decided that I needed to change my skincare and was looking for something that might help when Rosy suggested I try out a new day cream being launched by Clarins specifically designed for ageing and menopausal skin.  I was also persuaded to try their Shaping Facial Lift Serum, which sells extensively in Asia and claims to reduce puffiness and firm up facial contours.  I used both products for three months before assessing the results.

The serum changed my morning make-up routine as it comes with detailed instructions for a morning facial self-massage.  This involves sitting with your head in your hands and elbows on your knees (what my husband calls the ‘in despair’ position) and moving your hands to various points on the face and neck to drain excess fluids and fats.  It only takes a few minutes and you do it after applying the serum which contains ginger as an anti-fluid, guarana which is high in caffeine to release excess fats and kaki (persimmon) for firming.  It smells, as I think all Clarins products do, delicious enough to eat.  The first few times I used it I had to get out the instructions and look at the diagram but I very quickly remembered where to put my hands and in fact I could feel the place it felt right to press gently.  I found I enjoyed the brief breather in the morning rush, just stopping after my shower to sit and relax for a moment.  I am about half way through the product and feel that my skin is a little tighter and perhaps my chin a little firmer, but as I didn’t have a big problem with puffiness it would be interesting to hear from anyone who did and has tried this product.  I will continue with the morning exercise though as I enjoy it so much now and it can only help.

When I first tried the Super Restorative Day Cream I wasn’t expecting much.  Although it has been designed for the specific needs of skin weakened by the hormonal changes linked to ageing, it seemed far too light and silky to work well on wrinkles.  This may have been where I was going wrong because piling oily layers on my new lines was probably what was causing the spots.  Reading the ingredients I was amazed at how many things the cream contained: a plant extract called Harungana which is used in Madagascan traditional medicines to treat wounds,  Hyaluronic acid and Shea Butter to moisturise together with Vitamin C and some pigments to revive radiance.

The smell is a light flowery fragrance which I love and the texture is so sheer it sinks in immediately. I wasn’t totally surprised that it cleared up my spots within a week or so but I had no expectations of anything so delicate doing something very noticeable to those deepening lines and pigment patches, but it did!  My skin appeared brighter and softer and within moments of application the lines seemed to soften.  Over three months my skin seems more evenly coloured and has definitely gone back to at least what it was before.  Nothing is magic and ageing is going to happen, I know that, but I love this cream and will be using it from now on.  I intend to try the night cream and matching serum too.

It is about time someone came up with a cream especially for us poor hormonal women at the other end of the spectrum so thank you Clarins.  I still have at least another three months left in my pots so although not cheap they will last at least six months.
