Travel: A Hen Do In Benidorm

Benidorm. Not the most cultured or prestigious of places. However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover the beautiful old town and authentic Spanish restaurants alongside the beaches and bars....

I recently visited Benidorm for my friend Laura's 3 day Hen Do. I was a little apprehensive to say the least, having only seen glimpses of it on TV programmes, but I actually had a fantastic time.

We spent the first day on the beach, soaking up the sunshine, reading our books and paddling in the sea. It was lovely to catch up with friends, to completely relax and make the most of a break from work. Most of my friends are scattered around the country so to have 3 days straight together was great, it really took me back to my uni days!

On the second day we walked along Levante beach with our feet dipping in the sea, lapping up the waves. This made it a cool (it was over 30 degrees!) and very pleasant walk to lunch in the old town. The old town was very quaint and pretty,- certainly different to the picture painted of it being "Britain Abroad". Think lots of little cobbled streets and bright white stone buildings that you only see in the Mediterranean. The views of the beach and the bay were so beautiful from the old town, it really is worth venturing over there just to see them.

We had a delicious meal at an authentic Spanish restaurant and I'd actually go as far as to say that it was the best paella that I have ever had (and I've had A LOT of paella believe me- I'm quite a paella-fiend haha!). There's lots of little tapas bars and restaurants scattered around, both in the old town and on the sea front, and we ate some really nice food during our stay. We didn't have a bad meal the whole holiday actually, and that's praise indeed from me as I have quite high standards when it comes to restaurants!

On the third day we lounged around the pool, enjoying lunch and regular drinks at a nearby bar. Then in the afternoon we had a cocktail-making session booked, followed by another scrumptious meal at an Italian restaurant in the evening. Which brings me onto the nightlife...

We went in June and it was full of hen dos and stag dos. Although that's certainly not everyone's cup of tea, it did make the evening very lively and fun. It also made us (as quite a big hen party) fit in perfectly! There were lots of happy hour deals and always freebies to get you into the bars. I'm sure you can imagine the party scene! The drinks were extremely cheap as well- I took home much more money than I'd anticipated, so Benidorm is certainly good for the purse strings. In my opinion, the nightlife was much better than it is in England. I don't really like going clubbing at home as the clubs are usually small, cramped and very sweaty, and the music isn't often great. However, in Benidorm I really enjoyed it! The clubs and bars were never too crowded as there's just so many of them in such a concentrated area, and they were all air-conditioned so it was never too hot and sweaty. Yes, some of it was very cheesy, but you've got to embrace it haven't you?! The music was better too I thought- one night we were dancing to a live motown band in a bar, it was amazing!

And yes, we did see Sticky Vicki. However, I must admit I watched most of it with my hands over my eyes! If you're not familiar with Sticky Vicki, Google her (but maybe not if you're at work right now!)! It's kind of a Benidorm classic though isn't it?!

All in all, I had a great time in Benidorm- surprisingly so! The food and the old town were particularly excellent, and the night life was, of course, a good laugh! I'd highly recommend it for a holiday with the girls, or especially for hen dos! And, most importantly, I think that Laura enjoyed herself too :)

What do you think of Benidorm?
Are you going away anywhere this summer?
